September 16, 2008 -- Crews from Posen Construction, Inc. are gearing up to begin a $24 million project on 22 bridges above the I-696 freeway in Macomb County. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) project is scheduled to start on Thursday, Sept. 18. Of the 22 structures that will be repaired, 15 are located within the large interchange in the city of Warren. The remaining seven bridges are located near the interchange, between Dequindre Road and Schoenherr Highway.
This project is part of Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm's economic stimulus package. Announced in February 2008, the economic stimulus package accelerated almost $67 million in road and bridge projects in MDOT's Metro Region from fiscal year 2009 to fiscal year 2008.
Included in this investment is reconstruction of 12 ramps within the interchange, improved drainage capabilities, shoulder lighting and sign replacement.
The first stage of the project, beginning on Thursday, Sept. 18, is expected to last until early December. The first stage includes repairs to eight bridges over I-696. Beginning in spring 2009, ramp and utility upgrades will start.
During the project, shoulder closures may occur at any time on I-696. Lane restrictions on the freeway are allowed during the overnight hours on weekdays, and all times on weekends. Lane restrictions on Mound Road, Ryan Road and 11 Mile Road are allowed at any time. In addition, complete closures of overpasses are permitted during rehabilitation work.
Motorists are advised to check the MDOT lane closure link for project details at www.michigan.gov/drive. This project is expected to be fully opened to traffic next year in late October.
