September 17, 2008 -- Crews from Ajax Paving Industries Inc. have started a resurfacing project on more than 3 miles of M-53 (Van Dyke Avenue) in Sterling Heights, announced the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The resurfacing, between 15 Mile Road and 18 Mile Road, will greatly improve the ride quality for more than 60,000 motorists who use Van Dyke Avenue on a daily basis.

In order to complete the project this fall, crews are allowed to close a single lane in each direction at any time. Multiple lane closures are allowed during the overnight hours and on weekends. It is expected that the work will be completed in late November.

The $1.9 million resurfacing was made possible with a $1.5 million Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF) Category A grant awarded to BAE Systems in Sterling Heights. BAE Systems, a global company that develops, delivers and supports advanced defense and aerospace systems, plans to construct a $58 million engineering facility in Sterling Heights and create 460 new jobs. The remainder of the $1.9 million project included a local match of $233,000 from the city of Sterling Heights and $167,000 from MDOT's Metro Region.
