June Jobless Rates Increase in Most of Michigan's Regional Labor Markets
Summer Workforce Growth Pushed Rates Slightly Upward

Contact:  Lori Donlan (517) 373-9280

July 27, 2006 - June seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates increased in 14 of Michigan's 17 major labor market areas, according to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth.  Labor force and total employment levels increased seasonally in all areas.

"Typical labor market patterns dominated in June as many individuals entered the Michigan workforce seeking summer employment," said Rick Waclawek, director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information & Strategic Initiatives.  "Over the year, jobless rates have been steady or slightly improved throughout many areas of the state, and in several regions job gains in professional and business services and health care have offset jobs lost in manufacturing and retail trade."

The June jobless rate advances in the 14 regions were moderate, averaging a half percentage point.  Only two areas diverged markedly from the average rate increase.  The smallest unemployment rate increase of 0.2 of a percentage point took place in the Bay City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), while the largest rate advance of 1.1 percentage points occurred in the Detroit-Warren-Livonia MSA.

Michigan's three northernmost labor market regions recorded minor jobless rate declines in June.

Majority of Regions Display Minor Jobless Rate Reductions Since June 2005
From June 2005 to June 2006, unemployment rates decreased slightly in 14 of 17 major labor market areas with a median decrease of merely 0.2 of a percentage point.  The only notable over-the-year rate reductions were registered in the Saginaw-Saginaw Township North, Lansing-East Lansing, and Detroit-Warren-Livonia MSAs, each declining by a little over a half percentage point.

Since June 2005, the jobless rate in the Northeast Lower Michigan Region edged upward by 0.1 of a percentage point, while the rates in both the Jackson and Ann Arbor MSAs were unchanged.

Total Employment Up Over Month, Year
From May to June, total employment increased in all 17 areas with an average gain of one and a half percent.  The state's three northernmost regions registered large seasonal increases due to continued hiring for the summer tourism season.  Combined, the three areas' total employment count grew by 15,000 over the month.

Since June 2005, total employment levels increased in 16 of the state's major labor market areas with an average increase of around two percent.  From June 2005 to June 2006, total employment declined marginally by 0.2 percent in the Detroit-Warren-Livonia MSA.

Labor Force Levels Up Over Month, Year
In June, labor force levels increased in all of the state's major labor market areas by at least one percent.

Over the year, labor force levels rose in all regions with the exception of the Detroit-Warren-Livonia MSA.

Payroll Employment Mixed in June
The monthly survey of employers indicated that seasonally unadjusted payroll jobs in Michigan were little changed, edging upward in June by 2,000 to total 4,427,000.  Private sector job growth of 30,000 or 0.8 percent was offset by a 28,000 or 4.0 percent reduction in government employment.

Government jobs fell in June due to seasonal cutbacks in local and state education with the beginning of summer break at area schools and universities.  The decreases in local government education occurred statewide.

Most metropolitan areas reported seasonal private sector job gains in leisure and hospitality services (+12,000), professional and business services (+9,000), and construction (+8,000).  The private sector increases were offset somewhat by a 7,000 decline in education and health services, as the private education component of this category recorded typical seasonal cutbacks.

From June 2005 to June 2006, payroll jobs were mixed throughout the state, with seven metropolitan areas recording declines, six areas displaying total job gains, and the Ann Arbor MSA little changed.  Many metropolitan areas in the state reported relatively small over-the-year changes in payroll employment.  Notable drops in payroll employment over the year took place in the Detroit-Warren-Livonia and Jackson MSAs, while the most noteworthy gains occurred in the Lansing-East Lansing, Grand Rapids-Wyoming, and Holland-Grand Haven MSAs.

Since June 2005, manufacturing and retail trade employment fell in most metropolitan areas, while health care services and professional and business services displayed gains in the majority of areas.

County Jobless Rates Up Slightly Over Month, Down Somewhat Over Year
Fifty-four of Michigan's 83 counties recorded unemployment rate hikes in June, with a moderate average increase of a half percentage point.  Jobless rates declined over the month in 23 counties?all located in the state's northern areas.  The rates in six counties remained the same.

From June 2005 to June 2006, unemployment rates declined in 63 of the state's counties, with a minor average decrease of 0.4 of a percentage point.  Over the year, jobless rates increased in 16 counties and were unchanged in four.  The unemployment rate in Montcalm County jumped by over four full percentage points since June 2005 due to the closure of a large manufacturing facility.

Note:  Data in this release is not seasonally adjusted.  As a result, employment and unemployment trends may differ from previously released Michigan seasonally adjusted data.

A breakdown of seasonally unadjusted June workforce estimates for Michigan and its 17 major labor market areas follows, along with a listing of county jobless rates for June.
