February 14, 2005 – The 2005 Governor’s Conference
on Career Education kicked off today at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center.
“Participants will learn more about high school reform redesign strategies for
students to succeed in high school and better prepare for careers,” said David
C. Hollister, director of the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth
(DLEG).
The theme of this year’s conference is “Michigan’s 3Rs:
Rigor, Relevance & Reform.” Several hundred educators and school guidance
counselors, employers, parents and students are attending the conference, which
concludes Tuesday.
“Teachers
and counselors have the unique opportunity of preparing students to enter a
workplace and support an economy that will be more diversified than ever before,”
Hollister said. “As Michigan diversifies its economic base, the fastest-growing
occupations will require the technical skills taught in career and technical
education programs. This certainly benefits Michigan and its students by developing
the skilled workforce we need grow our economy.”
The conference features outstanding speakers, including the
Hollister; Dr. Jeremy Hughes, acting superintendent of public instruction, Michigan
Department of Education; Ryan Donlan, superintendent of Bay-Arenac Community
High School; and Homer Hickam, best-selling author of We Are Not Afraid;
The Keeper’s Son; Rocket Boys/October Sky.
A highlight of the conference
is the presentation of the Governor’s Excellence in Practice Award to this year’s
honorees. The award recognizes best practices, achievements, and programs in
preparing students for careers.
The recipients of the 2005 Governor’s Excellence in Practice
Awards are:
Computer Technology Management
Program, Tuscola Technology Center, Tuscola Intermediate School District. Key
partner is: Thumb Regional II Educational Advisory Group.
Health Technology Medical Science Program, Bay-Arenac Intermediate
School District Career Center. Key partners are: Bay Regional Medical
Center; Center for Rehabilitation at Bay Regional Medical Center – West Campus;
and Bangor Medical Center.
Winning Futures – Mentoring
Partnerships. Partners are: Warren Consolidated School
District, Macomb Intermediate School District.
