June 26, 2009 - State Police Train Citizen Corps Volunteers to Assist During Emergencies

Contact:  Sgt. Kevin Sweeney, MSP/EMHSD, (517) 719-1195
Agency: State Police

LANSINGFor the next two days, approximately 100 Citizen Corps members will receive hands-on training by the Michigan State Police (MSP) during the Citizens Police Academy to enhance their skills when volunteering with police agencies during an emergency.

In order to attend, individuals must be registered with a Citizen Corps program including Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), Neighborhood Watch (NW) and Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS), which focus on emergency preparedness and serving as a trusted resource for first responders.

Hosted at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing, participants will learn about many facets of law enforcement including police ethics, crash reconstruction, evidence collection, traffic control, witness recognition and Citizen Corps program training techniques.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to experience laps around the MSP Drive Track, see a demonstration by the MSP Canine Unit, tour the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Training Center, as well as meet the MSP Bomb Squad, Emergency Support (ES) Team and Dive Team.

"The Citizens Police Academy is a great opportunity for Citizen Corps volunteers to gain a better understanding of law enforcement and learn how they can assist in our mission to protect public health and safety," said Capt. W. Thomas Sands of the MSP Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (EMHSD).  "After attending this training, participants will be better prepared to assist both their community and law enforcement agencies in times of an emergency."
