July 1, 2009 - One-Day, Multi-State Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Operation Results in 594 Violations

Contact:  Lt. Patrick Morris, MSP Traffic Safety Division (989) 758-1909

LANSING. A one-day commercial motor vehicle enforcement blitz by the Michigan State Police (MSP), Ohio State Highway Patrol, Indiana State Police and Illinois State Police along the I-94 and I-80 corridors resulted in 594 driver and vehicle safety violations. The operation, which took place on June 24, 2009, focused on safe food transportation and driver violations.

Seventy-eight officers from the four states issued 180 traffic citations and conducted 373 vehicle safety inspections during the operation. The inspections resulted in 32 commercial vehicles and 22 commercial vehicle drivers being placed out-of-service. One commercial vehicle stopped in Michigan was found to be hauling adulterated food products. The Michigan Department of Agriculture was on scene and took control of the contaminated food products.

"All aspects of public safety are addressed during these cooperative commercial vehicle operations," stated Capt. Robert R. Powers, commander of the MSP Traffic Safety Division. "As more people take to the roads to travel for the Fourth of July holiday, it is important to remember to share the road and comply with all traffic laws for the safety of all motorists."

Enforcement in Michigan took place along I-94 from the Michigan/Indiana line to Port Huron.
