October 19, 2009 - Michigan Participates in National Operation Targeting Unsafe Truck Drivers

Contact:  Lt. Pat Morris, Traffic Safety Division, (989) 758-1909
Agency: State Police

LANSING.  This week, Michigan State Police (MSP) motor carrier officers will join federal and state enforcement officers from across the country in an effort to address commercial motor vehicle driver behaviors that increase the likelihood of a crash.

During the week-long enforcement effort, known as Operation Safe Driver, MSP motor carrier officers will focus on identifying and stopping commercial motor vehicle drivers who engage in dangerous driving practices such as following too closely, speeding, improper lane use and driver qualification violations.

"Unsafe driving behavior is a major contributing factor in commercial vehicle crashes," said Captain Robert R. Powers Jr., MSP Traffic Safety Division commander.  "During this week, we hope to educate commercial motor vehicle drivers about their responsibility to operate in a safe manner and be respectful to other motorists."

Operation Safe Driver is organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
