Vote Nov. 8

NOVEMBER 1, 2005

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is encouraging voters to participate in the Tuesday, Nov. 8 election.

Elections are being held in 79 counties that will impact local school districts, district libraries, intermediate school districts, community colleges, cities, townships, villages and counties.

"Every election is important and so is your participation," Land said. "That’s why we’re working to enhance voter convenience and accessibility. Whether it’s improving polling place access for voters with disabilities, providing communities with up-to-date optical scan equipment or adding efficiencies through Michigan’s consolidated election law, we’re continually building on our state’s record of election ingenuity and integrity. But voters must do their part. Democracy is all about being heard. Make your voice heard by voting on Nov. 8."

Land reminds residents that Michigan’s online Voter Information Center is an excellent source that can address many questions. It covers topics such as finding local election officials, voter registration, absentee voting and types of voting equipment. The Web site is www.Michigan.gov/vote.

The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot by mail is 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. Residents who want to vote an absentee ballot in person must do so by 4 p.m. Monday,

Nov. 7. Voters who qualify for an emergency absentee ballot may obtain one until 4 p.m. on Election Day.

This is the first year that Michigan’s consolidated election law has been in effect. It makes elections more efficient and cost-effective by limiting their number. It also helps voters plan to participate by allowing them to mark upcoming elections on their calendars.

The deadline for registering to vote in the Nov. 8 election has passed. Eligible residents can, however, register for future elections at any time.
