HIV/AIDS Prevention and Intervention Section Awards $2.5 Million for HIV Prevention Programs

LANSING - The HIV/AIDS Prevention & Intervention Section (HAPIS) within the Michigan Department of Community Health's (MDCH) Division of Health, Wellness and Disease Control, recently has awarded funds to 17 community-based and non-governmental organizations to provide highly targeted evidence-based HIV prevention services. Up to $2.5 million is expected to be awarded annually to these agencies through 2012.

Funded services include HIV counseling, testing and referral; group and individual level education and counseling and community level interventions designed to change norms around HIV risk behaviors. Services are targeted to populations at greatest risk for acquiring or transmitting HIV, including HIV positive individuals, men who have sex with men, injecting drug users, and heterosexual individuals whose partners are HIV infected or at high risk. A majority of the funds awarded support programming specifically targeting African Americans, particularly young adults, who are disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS in Michigan.

Awards are as follows: AIDS Partnership Michigan (Detroit): $279,549; Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (Dearborn): $124,885; Community AIDS Resources and Education Services (Kalamazoo): $217,204; Community Health Awareness Group (Detroit): $212,108; Detroit Medical Center (Detroit): $132,241; Gospel Against AIDS (Detroit): $75,650; HIV/AIDS Resource Center (Ypsilanti): $157,762; Hearth Home (Saginaw): $122,956; Horizon's Project (Detroit): $95,040; Ingham County Health Department (Lansing): $105,963; Kent County Health Department (Grand Rapids): $115,671; Lansing Area AIDS Network (Lansing): $92,920; Michigan AIDS Coalition (Ferndale): $338,294; Planned Parenthood of Mid and Southeast Michigan: $5,000; Ruth Ellis Center (Detroit): $78,446; Traverse Health Clinic and Coalition (Traverse City): $35,000; Visiting Nurse Association of Southeast Michigan (Detroit): $88,148; Wellness HIV/AIDS Services (Flint): $150,779. Kent County Health Department was awarded $109,346 to provide training and education to health care professionals and students.
