Program aligns education with 21st century workforce needs, professional development
LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today encouraged high school students across the state to participate in the Real World Design Challenge (RWDC), a competition that enables students to hone their science and math skills while working alongside industry and government experts to develop more fuel-efficient aircraft. The winning design may be put to use by the aviation industry.
"Education is the key to economic success for our state and for our young people to succeed in the global economy," Granholm said. "The design challenge gets students involved in science, technology, engineering and math, and helps develop the critical skills to prepare students for high-demand jobs in the 21st century."
The design challenge participants will be provided the latest engineering software from Parametric Technology Corporation and Mentor Graphics, Mechanical Analysis Division (formerly Flomerics) at no cost. Teams will be able to seek advice online from scientists, engineers and aviation/aerospace experts from the Department of Energy National Laboratories, the federal Aviation Administration Centers, higher education, and industry.
"Through the challenge, all Michigan students will have access to the best resources to make Michigan's future workforce more globally competitive," said Dr. Ralph K. Coppola, director of the Real World Design Challenge and director of Global Government & Strategic Education Programs at Parametric Technology Corporation.
Finalists of the statewide competition will be announced in early 2010 and will go on to compete in a national challenge held in Washington, D.C. The winning design may be put to use by the aviation industry.
Schools interested in participating in the Real World Design Challenge should register immediately at www.realworlddesignchallenge.organd sign up for free, online training before the November, 16, 2009, deadline.
