MDOT reminds drivers and hunters to play it safe on roads

November 12, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reminding drivers and hunters to travel safely during the regular firearm deer season that runs from Nov. 15 through Nov. 30.

Deer are on the run this time of year, particularly between the hours of sunset and sunrise, further increasing the possibility of a deer-related crash. MDOT reminds drivers "Don't Veer for Deer," which means braking firmly and coming to a controlled stop if a crash with a deer is unavoidable, even if it means striking the animal. MDOT also is reminding hunters to pull their vehicles off the roadway as far as possible and that parking along limited access highways is prohibited except in the case of an emergency.

"Every driver should be alert for both deer and hunters who may be crossing the roadway or walking along roadsides early in the morning or late in the evening when visibility is limited," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "We want everyone to be safe on Michigan roads this November."

Hunters are encouraged to plan their routes and travel prepared for changing weather conditions. Although many construction projects are winding down, MDOT maintains information on construction that is still active on its Mi Drive traffic Web site at www.michigan.gov/drive. Motorists also can follow MDOT traffic alerts at www.twitter.com/MichiganDOT. MDOT encourages all motorists to wear their safety belts and refrain from talking on cell phones or texting behind the wheel.

Daily local and statewide weather forecasts are featured every 10 minutes at all 14 Michigan Welcome Centers on the Explore Channel TV network. The Explore Channel, a partnership by MDOT, Travel Michigan and the Digital 10 Network, provides travelers with tourism information, weather and safety messages at no cost to taxpayers.
