The Department of Natural Resources and Environment will host two Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) winter workshops: an archery workshop in February and a discovery weekend in March, both designed especially for women who want to learn new skills, enjoy the outdoors and have fun doing it.

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, would-be archers can learn the basics at the "Beyond BOW Archery Workshop" at the Demmer Shooting Center, 3365 E. Jolly Rd. in Lansing. The workshop will run 6 to 9 p.m. and cover safety measures, proper shooting form and technique; overviews of recurve, compound and crossbows; and maintenance and selection of equipment. All equipment is provided and there is no skill level required. The cost for this program is $10 per person.

Those who want to sample from several different outdoor activities should consider the BOW Discovery Weekend Workshop on Friday-Sunday, March 5-7, at the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center, 104 Conservation Dr. in Roscommon. Guests will check in on Friday between 4 and 7 p.m. and depart Sunday at 1 p.m. The Discovery Weekend Workshop is a chance to have fun with other beginners learning a variety of outdoor activities. When registering, participants will choose their top six preferences among cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, trapping, predator hunting, turkey hunting, shotgun shooting, muzzle loading, handgun shooting, winter bird watching, geocaching, outdoor survival and first aid, hiking and backpacking, and dogsledding. The cost for this weekend event is $200 and includes meals, lodging and all equipment except cross-country skis (rental available for $20).

Registration information and forms for both workshops are available at www.michigan.gov/bow. For information on these programs and more, email DNR-Outdoors-Woman@michigan.gov, call (517) 241-2225.

The DNRE is committed to conserve, manage, protect, and promote accessible use and enjoyment of the state's environmental, natural resource, and related economic interests for current and future generations.
