Contact:  Thomas Paquin 231-627-9011
Agency: Natural Resources

August 27, 2007

The Department of Natural Resources announced today that the Mackinac Island State Harbor will be closed after Labor Day, and will reopen in April or May for the 2008 boating season.

This closure is due to major renovations planned for the existing facility which will include new electric service, water and sewer, as well as decking replacement and landscaping.

Funds for this project are from the Michigan State Waterways Fund, a restricted fund comprised of revenues collected from boating registrations and designated fuel tax.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
