Lakeport State Park Opens a Camper Cabin

May 13, 2008

Department of Natural Resources state park and recreation officials today announced that Lakeport State Park is taking reservations for its new camper cabin located on beautiful Lake Huron. The camper cabin is ideal for families looking to enjoy a "GO-Get Outdoors" camping experience but don*t have a tent or a camper.

Imagine going for a walk on the Lake Huron shoreline to watch a beautiful sunrise. Later that day you can sit on the porch of your cabin to view the passing Great Lakes freighters and witness the reflections of a beautiful sunset.

"Campers that have used the cabin thus far have loved its seclusion and the scenic views; many have called back to make a future reservation," said Mark Sine, Lakeport State Park supervisor. "The cabin is located at the north end of the campground, but is set back so cabin users have more privacy than they would at a regular campsite. The cabin also is conveniently located near the modern restroom and showers."

The cabin sleeps six, has two bedrooms, each with its own set of bunk beds, and a full-size sleeper sofa located in the living room/kitchen area. All three rooms are equipped with electric heat. The living room/kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave and movable counter/cabinet unit for storing dishes and supplies. Outside, the cabin has its own fire circle, picnic table and grill. Visitors will need to bring their own bedding, dishes and cooking equipment.

The Lakeport State Park camper cabin is available to rent for $80 per night through Oct. 25, and can be reserved by calling (800) 447-2757. Lakeport State Park is located at 7605 Lakeshore Road in Lakeport. For more information about the park or the camper cabin, contact the park at (810) 327-6224.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
