Harrisville State Park Offers Unique 'GO-Get Outdoors' Discovery Event

May 19, 2008

Harrisville State Park will offer campers a "GO-Get Outdoors" opportunity to explore Alcona County's natural, historic and cultural features by offering a "Discover Alcona" contest, which began May 16.

Harrisville State Park has selected over 13 locations throughout Alcona County that contain special features, such as scenic overlooks, an old dam or historical buildings. These locations are highlighted on the contest entry form that is available to any park visitor at Harrisville State Park. Some of these places could be the highlight of a family vacation as they search and discover some hidden jewels that most visitors would normally not come across when visiting Alcona County.

Participants in the contest will be provided Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates and written directions to each location. Participants will need to find at least six of the locations and return the entry form with the dates and times they visited each feature on the contest entry form.

The contest is free to all participants and will begin on May 16 and run through Sept. 30, 2008. At the end of the contest a drawing will be held of all entries. The winner will receive a two-night stay at the Sunrise Rustic Cabin during the 2008-09 winter season.

This is a great opportunity to get outdoors and explore Alcona County while enjoying one of Michigan's Great State parks on Michigan's Sunrise Side.

Harrisville State Park is located at 248 State Park Rd. in Harrisville. For more information about the contest or the park, contact the park at 989-724-5126. For reservations, call 1-800-44-PARKS (or 7-2757), or make your reservation on-line at www.midnrreservations.com.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the entrance. Cost is $24 for resident annual and $6 for resident daily. A non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident daily is $8.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
