Michigan Natural Resources Commission to Meet in Lansing on Nov. 5

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission will meet on Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health, located at 4125 Beaumont Rd. in Lansing.

Prior to the Committee of the Whole meeting, there will be two policy committee meetings. At 10:30 a.m., the NRC Policy Committee on Technology, Information, Marketing and Education will meet to receive a presentation on the Department of Natural Resources' use of social media, including Facebook and Twitter.

At 12 p.m., the Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries will meet to review several items including fisheries orders, invasive species, recommendations from the Deer Advisory Team, an update on the NRC's authority to regulate supplemental feeding of deer, DNR Hunting Guide rules and regulations, and quality deer management options.

At 2 p.m., the NRC will hear an appeal on the DNR's denial to establish a swim area in the waters of Walloon Lake.

The Committee of the Whole will convene at 3 p.m. to review action items before DNR Director Rebecca Humphries; to receive a state legislative update and a Washington, D.C. update; to review a marketing report recently completed by Pace & Partners; an update on the DNR's Communications Division; an update on the Michigan Historical Center; special recognitions and a presentation of the 2009 Turkey Patch award winner.

Public comment before the NRC will begin at 4:30 p.m. Persons wishing to address the commission should contact Teresa Gloden, executive assistant to the NRC, at (517) 373-2352 or glodent@michigan.gov. Persons also may contact Gloden at the meeting location to sign up to speak before the commission.

At 5 p.m., the NRC and Director Humphries will present Dennis Muchmore, former executive director of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs, with a Partner in Conservation Award.

Director Humphries will have several action items to consider at the meeting including an order to regulate the use of wheeled, motorized vehicles in the Russell Lake Parcel in Roscommon County, and user charges at the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center. Humphries also will consider authorizing several land transactions.
