October 5, 2016 – It’s official: M-22 in Benzie and Manistee counties is now the M-22 Benzie Manistee Pure Michigan Byway, the latest so designated to promote scenic, cultural, historic and recreational opportunities along a state highway corridor.

Sponsored locally by the Alliance for Economic Success and the M-22 Lakes to Land Pure Michigan Byway Committee, the designation was celebrated today in an event at Camp Arcadia. Speakers included Alliance for Economic Success Community Development Director Tamara Buswinka, Al Taylor and Connie Barnes from the M-22 Lakes to Land Pure Michigan Byway Committee, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Director Kirk Steudle, representatives for U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, Manistee Visitors Bureau Executive Director Kathryn Kenny, and Grand Traverse Land Regional Land Conservancy Executive Director Glen Chown.

“This designation is a true testament to those folks working together… to make something great happen,” Buswinka said.

The Pure Michigan Byway program was a collaborative effort of MDOT and the Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC) to rebrand the former Heritage Route program, linking the goals of the program with the success of the Pure Michigan tourism campaign.

“Getting a Pure Michigan Byway designation actually takes a lot of work at the community level,” Steudle said. “All the communities along this new section of Pure Michigan Byway on M-22 have really come together at different levels of government, private companies, and private associations to work with MDOT to make this designation happen.”

The new byway runs from the US-31 intersection just north of Manistee through Onekama and Arcadia in Manistee County, and through Elberta and Frankfort in Benzie County.
