State Board Statement on the Legislature Continuing Funding for Common Core

Contact: Martin Ackley, Director, Office of Public and Governmental Affairs 517-241-4395
Agency: Education

October 1, 2013

LANSING ? The State Board of Education issues the following statement regarding attention by the Michigan Legislature and the Common Core State Standards:

The State Board of Education appreciates the Legislature's thoughtful discussions regarding the Common Core State Standards, and the affirmative vote taken by the Michigan House of Representatives last week that allows continuation of state spending on the Common Core.

The State Board further encourages the Michigan Senate to affirm the role of the Michigan Department of Education to implement the CCSS without delay, as such may jeopardize many educational reforms, including those initiated by the Legislature.

The State Board of Education looks forward to working with the Legislature in the future on our mutual goals, including providing Michigan children with the best possible educational opportunities and a bright future.
