September 6, 2013 -- As of 2 p.m. today, the M-65 bridge over the north branch of the Thunder Bay River in Alpena County will be reopened to traffic.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that the project contractor is reopening the bridge to traffic, bringing this summer's detour to an end. Only temporary lane closures will be required during the coming week as the project is wrapped up.
"We can't thank motorists enough for their patience during this lengthy detour," said Doug Wilson, manager of MDOT's Alpena Transportation Service Center (TSC). "We're pleased that we were able to reopen the bridge in time for the Posen Potato Festival."
While originally scheduled to be worked on one lane at a time, which would have allowed traffic to continue using the bridge during construction, MDOT closed the bridge entirely in April when voids were discovered beneath the bridge approaches. For the remainder of the project, traffic was rerouted on Long Rapids, Bolton and Long Lake roads.
