Sept. 20, 2013

Brimley State Park (Chippewa County) will host its annual harvest festivals on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27-28, and Oct. 4-5. Each evening there will be a not-so-scary haunted house from 6-7:30 p.m. for children, and a scarier haunted house from 8-10 p.m. for adults and brave children. Visitors are asked to adhere to the scheduled age-appropriate times and to bring one or more non-perishable food item to donate for each time they travel through the haunted house.

On Saturdays (Sept. 28 and Oct. 5) a variety of activities is available throughout the day for campers only. The schedule is as follows:

  • Pancake breakfast: 9-11 a.m.
  • Pumpkin carving: 1-3 p.m.
  • Chili cook-off: 3 p.m.
  • Costume contest: 4 p.m.
  • Trick-or-treating: 5 p.m.

Brimley State Park is located at 9200 W. 6 Mile Road, in Brimley. The park features plenty of recreation opportunities throughout the year, such as fishing, hiking, swimming and paddling.

Park staff wishes to thank Bay Mills Indian Community volunteers, Superior Township Community volunteers, LSSU Parks and Recreation Club volunteers, Brimley State Park campground hosts, Four Seasons Market and the Salvation Army for participating in this year's harvest festival events.

Harvest festival events are free and open to all ages, but a Recreation Passport is required for all vehicles entering Brimley State Park. A Recreation Passport may be purchased at the campground office at the park.

The Recreation Passport is an easy, affordable way for residents to enjoy and support outdoor recreation opportunities in Michigan. By checking "YES" for the $11 Recreation Passport ($5 for motorcycles) when renewing a license plate through the Secretary of State (by mail, kiosk, online at www.expresssos.com or at branch offices), Michigan motorists get access to state parks, recreation areas, state forest campgrounds, nonmotorized state trailhead parking and state boat launches. In addition, Recreation Passport holders can enjoy real savings at businesses and retailers that participate in the Passport Perks discount program. The Recreation Passport is valid until the next license plate renewal date. Nonresidents can purchase the Recreation Passport ($30.50 annual; $8.40 daily) at any state park or recreation area or through the Michigan e-Store at www.michigan.gov/estore.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr.
