Wildlife lovers will flock to Maumee Bay State Park in northern Ohio Sept. 27 and 28 for the Federal Duck Stamp Contest. This federally mandated art contest features works of art depicting North American ducks.
Hosted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the 2013 Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest will select the 2014-2015 Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, also known as the Duck Stamp.
Artwork from the contest finalists will be on display Friday and Saturday. A winner will be chosen Saturday. Judging begins at 9 a.m., and the winner will be announced at 12:30 p.m. The winning artwork will be displayed on the nation's 81st Duck Stamp, to be released in 2014.
Viewing of the artwork and judging process is free and open to the public.
This year's Federal Duck Stamp Contest honors 1946 Duck Stamp artist and conservation leader Bob Hines, an Ohio native. Hines dedicated his career to natural resources conservation, working for both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Federal Duck Stamps are vital tools for wetland conservation. Ninety-eight cents out of every dollar generated by the sale of Federal Duck Stamps goes directly to purchase or lease wetland habitat for protection in the National Wildlife Refuge System. The Federal Duck Stamp has been called one of the most successful conservation programs ever initiated and is a highly effective way to conserve America's natural resources.
