Federal Food Program Now Available for Adult Care Providers

LANSING - The Michigan Department of Education's Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is now offering participation in the adult component of the program. Eligible non-residential adult care centers can receive federal reimbursements for serving nutritious meals to adults age 60 or older, or those who are functionally impaired.
Licensed or approved adult day care centers that are operated by public or private non-profit organizations, and certain for-profit organizations may participate in CACFP. An eligible center must be non-residential and provide a community-based program.
These programs should be structured, comprehensive, and provide health and social support services to enrolled participants. Centers that simply provide social or rehabilitative services to adults do not qualify to participate in CACFP. For-profit centers may be eligible for CACFP if at least 25 percent of their participants receive benefits under Title XIX or Title XX. In order to participate in CACFP, adult day care centers must also be approved by state and local authorities to provide adult day care services.
Institutions can apply to participate in the adult component of CACFP beginning April 1, 2013, by completing the Michigan Electronic Grants System Plus (MEGS+) application. MEGS+ can be accessed through the Michigan Educational Information System (MEIS) homepage at www.michigan.gov/meis.
Institutions applying for participation in CACFP must submit required documentation including copies of current health and fire inspections, financial information to demonstrate fiscal viability, non-profit documentation, if applicable, or proof that 25 percent of their participants receive benefits under Title XIX or Title XX.
