MDCH Announces Matthew Davis, M.D. as Michigan's New Chief Medical Executive

LANSING - The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) today announced the appointment of Matthew M. Davis, M.D., M.A.P.P., as Michigan's Chief Medical Executive effective March 18, 2013. As Michigan's Chief Medical Executive, Davis will serve Michigan citizens by providing professional medical leadership, expertise and coordination in addressing public health issues, workforce issues, and health policy development to the MDCH.
"Dr. Davis has extensive experience as a leader and collaborator with the State of Michigan and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality," said James K. Haveman, Director of the MDCH. "Having his expertise on hand at the Department of Community Health will be invaluable as we work to continually improve the health, wellness, and safety of Michigan residents."
Dr. Davis is Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, and Associate Professor of Public Policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He joined the faculty at University of Michigan in 2000, and for more than 12 years has focused his research on three major areas of health policy: vaccines and vaccine financing, regulation and financing of government-sponsored health programs, and characterization of public attitudes and opinions about health and health policy. Dr. Davis will continue on the faculty at the University of Michigan while also serving as the Chief Medical Executive for MDCH.
Dr. Davis is the founding director of the National Poll on Children's Health and the National Voices Project, which use advanced research techniques to gather timely data about health, healthcare utilization, and health policy at local and national levels.
Dr. Davis has presented his policy-relevant research to the National Vaccine Advisory Committee and at many national medical and public health meetings. In recognition of his policy-oriented work, he was honored with the national Nemours Child Health Services Research Award in 2007. Aside from his research, Dr. Davis has been recognized with teaching and mentoring awards at the University of Michigan and also practices primary care pediatrics and internal medicine in the U-Michigan Health System.
Dr. Davis earned his M.D. cum laude from Harvard Medical School and trained in pediatrics and internal medicine at the Children's Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He subsequently trained in public policy and health services research as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar and Irving Harris Child Policy Fellow at the University of Chicago. He is board-certified in both pediatrics and internal medicine.
