State hosts annual Earth Day celebration

3,000 students and parents visit DEQ headquarters

Members of the media are invited to join the Michigan departments of Environmental Quality, Agriculture and Rural Development and Natural Resources for a day-long Earth Day celebration Thursday at Constitution Hall in Lansing.

The annual event recognizes Michigan's unique environment and natural resources through fun and creative public outreach and educational exhibits, presentations and performances. 

Schoolchildren, teachers, parents and community leaders will attend the event, which features more than 50 hands-on activities.  A kick-off ceremony and program will commence at 9 a.m. The day includes special awards presented to the State of Michigan by the Detroit Audubon Society and presentation of Earth Day poster contest awards to school children.

WHEN:           Thursday, April 18, 2013, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Note: Kick-off program will begin at 9 a.m.
