Drug collections are a focus for the DEQ

On May 1, 2013, the DEQ released a request for proposals for development of household drug collection programs in Michigan. This is the second round of drug collection grants the DEQ has issued in two years as part of its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Currently, most water treatment plants and septic systems are not equipped to remove pharmaceuticals from the wastewater, so proper collection and disposal are integral to prevent the release of these compounds to the surface and groundwater. Additionally, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy has identified proper medication disposal as essential to reducing prescription drug abuse. Household drug collection programs provide free and convenient take-back options for residents and allow grantees to gather data for program refinement.

Requests for funding will be accepted from May 1 through May 31, 2013. Organizations receiving grants are required to match total project costs by at least 25 percent using dollars, in-kind services and/or third-party contributions. Preference will be given to projects that include community-based coalitions. Projects should be transferable and act as models to be shared with others across the state.

The Community P2 Grants provide matching funds to local and tribal governments, health departments, municipalities, non-profits and regional planning agencies to aid in the development of P2 projects.
