War of 1812 historic sites tour and symposium set for Oct. 13-14

On Oct. 13-14, residents are invited to celebrate the bicentennial of the War of 1812 with a historic sites tour and international symposium, sponsored by the Michigan Commission on the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the Detroit Historical Society (DHS).
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 13, visit key War of 1812 locations in Southeast Michigan. Tour stops include the River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe, Hull?s Trace in Wayne County, sites of the battles of Brownstown and Monguagon, and several 1812 locations in Detroit.
The International War of 1812 Symposium, "Remembering the Forgotten Conflict: Reflections on the War of 1812," will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the following day, Oct. 14 at the Detroit Historical Museum. The program features presentations on key War of 1812 events by five noted historians from the United States and Canada. For more details and registration, visit www.michigan.gov/war1812.

A $15 discount is available to those registering for both the historic sites tour AND the international symposium. If registering for both, the cost is $160 (or $150 for DHS members). To obtain the $15 discount when registering for both events, attendees must contact Annette McConnell at jam1776@sbcglobal.net or use the symposium/historic sites tour registration form.
Lodging is available (at a discounted attendee rate) at Inn on Ferry Street, located near the Detroit Historical Museum.
The governor-appointed Michigan Commission on the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 is charged with encouraging, planning and developing activities, events, programs, observances and services appropriate to commemorate Michigan's role in the War of 1812.
