Do I need to show proof of insurance each time I renew my plate?

Not if your insurance company participates in the department's Electronic Insurance Verification program. If your plate renewal notice includes a nine-character Personal Information Number (PIN) OR the phrase "insurance verified electronically" in the lower left corner, this means your insurance company participates in EIV and has notified the department that your vehicle is insured. You do not need proof of insurance when renewing your plate.

If your plate renewal form states "Proof of insurance required," you will need to submit proof of Michigan no-fault insurance when renewing your plate by mail or at a Secretary of State office.
