After 4 years, Self-Service Stations helping more
customers than ever
MARCH 31, 2009
Four years after she launched the innovative Self-Service Station program,
Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land said today that the
number of customers enjoying the technology's ease and convenience continues to
grow.
The program recorded more than 130,000 license plate tab renewal transactions
over the last 12 months, an increase of 35 percent from the prior year and more
than 300 percent from the first year. Since April 1, 2005, the machines have
recorded more than 330,000 transactions and $33 million in revenue.
"Our customers deserve the most efficient options we can give them to get
their business done," said Land. "The timesaving technology of Self-Service
Stations is making life a little easier for more and more people each year.
That's good government and great customer service."
The ATM-style machines allow residents to print off their license plate tabs
by simply scanning a bar code on their renewal notice and then swiping a Visa,
MasterCard or Discover Card to pay their registration fees. The do-it-yourself
transactions, which free up office staff to assist other customers, are often
completed in two minutes or less.
Customer enthusiasm for Self-Service Stations remains strong. One message the
department received via e-mail stated, "I just wanted to say what a fantastic
idea the self-help machine to renew registration is. It was quick and easy to
use, and I was in and out with my new registration and tab within minutes.
Fantastic!"
There are 43 Self-Service Stations statewide, 24 of which may be accessed 24
hours a day, seven days a week. They are located at 34 PLUS Offices, six
SUPER!Centers and three municipal buildings. Stations will be installed at an
additional 12 offices across the state over the next two months.
Land created PLUS offices and SUPER!Centers as part of her ongoing initiative
to modernize branch offices. The facilities provide expanded hours and enhanced
services at no extra cost to taxpayers.
Customers still can renew their tabs online, by phone, by mail, or at a
branch office. Visit the department's Web site at
www.Michigan.gov/sos or call 1-888-SOS-MICH for more information about
offices and services.
