Plates help support Michigan higher ed., offer unique holiday present
Have a big Spartan, Wolverine, Chippewa, or Bronco sports fan, or a proud
alum of any of Michigan's public universities in your family?
Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land suggests buying a university fundraising
license plate as a unique gift.
"University plates are a great way to support higher education while showing
pride in your favorite Michigan university," Land said. "Surprise your loved one
with a gift they'll be proud to show off for years to come."
People can buy a plate at a Secretary of State office for a spouse or family
member if they live at the same address.
Fundraising plates cost just $35, $25 of which goes directly to the school,
in addition to the standard vehicle registration fee. The cost of renewing the
plate is $10, which goes entirely to the institution, on top of the registration
fee.
The plates also can be personalized for an extra $30 for the initial plate,
and $15 extra when renewing. Buyers can visit the department's "Plate
It Your Way" Web page to see if a plate configuration is available.
Besides the 15 university plates, vehicle owners also can choose from
fundraising plates that support wildlife habitat, Michigan lighthouses,
agricultural heritage, and the American Red Cross and Salvation Army, among
other causes.
