Title Histories

Vehicle title and registration histories can be purchased through the Record Lookup Unit.  If you do not have an account with the Department of State, you must complete a record request form each time you request a title history.  (Use form BDVR-153 if you are requesting your own record, or form BDVR-154 if you are requesting another person's record.  See below.)  Each transaction in a history is billed at $7.00 and must be paid in advance* with a personal check, money order, or credit card (Discover, VISA, or MasterCard).  A certified copy of a record is available for an additional $1.00 fee.

Please follow the instructions included on the record request form.  If you need assistance in completing the form, please call 517.322.1624.

* Customers will be billed separately for histories that result in multiple transactions.

You may use one of the following methods to order your title history:

Mail:  Mail the completed form and payment to:
                       Michigan Department of State
                       Record Lookup Unit
                       7064 Crowner Drive
                       Lansing, MI  48918-1502

Fax:  You must have a Department of State account or pay with a credit card (Discover, VISA, or MasterCard).  Fax the completed form to 517.322.1181.

Telephone:  This service is available for individuals ordering their own record and paying with a Discover, VISA, or MasterCard. Customers with a Department account may also utilize the telephone service by calling 517.322.1624.

You may not order your record by telephone, if you require your information to be mailed to an address different than what is currently on file with the Secretary of State .  Regular business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern time.

NOTE:  You must include the license plate number, registration number, or the vehicle identification number (VIN).

When calling after business hours, callers will be directed to the Record Lookup Unit's automated 24-hour voicemail system.  Callers will be prompted to leave the required information in order to request their record.

Walk-In:  Information for Walk-Ins.

Note:  Mailed or faxed requests are typically processed within three weeks, but can take as long as four to six weeks.  Customers without a permissible purpose will have personal information redacted from the record lookup response.
