Crashes

The Michigan Vehicle Code authorizes the Secretary of State to reexamine drivers due to crash involvement under certain circumstances.  The purpose of these contacts is to encourage safer driving and reduce your risk of being involved in additional crashes.

Any crash resulting in a fatality where the crash report indicates the driver was at fault and/or drinking by the driver will result in a driver assessment reexamination to determine whether the driver can operate a motor vehicle safely and whether any license sanction is warranted.  The reexamination could result in restrictions, suspension, or revocation of the driving privileges, and an on-the-road performance test will be required.  A reinstatement fee will be due at the end of any licensing control.

A driver who has three or more at-fault crashes entered on their driver record within a two-year period may receive traffic safety correspondence, or may be scheduled for a driver assessment reexamination.  If scheduled for a reexamination, the driver must pass the vision, road sign, written, and on-road performance tests.  These tests are given to assess the driver's ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.  Licensing controls may include restrictions, suspension, or revocation of your driving privileges.  A reinstatement fee will be due at the end of any licensing control.
