A Michigan driver license is usually valid for four years* and expires on your birthday in the year shown on the license's upper right corner. If you are under age 21, your driver license will expire on your 21st birthday.
A Michigan resident who will be out of state when his/her license expires should visit a Secretary of State branch office before leaving the state. A Michigan driver license may be renewed up to twelve months early at a branch office if you are unable to renew it on time for any reason.
An out of state Michigan resident who has questions about his/her expired license may contact:
Michigan Department of State
Out-of-State Resident Services Unit
7064 Crowner Drive
Lansing, MI 48918
Phone: (517) 322-1473
Fax: (517) 322-5438
It's easiest for you if you renew your driver license before you leave the state.
By law, Michigan requires an individual to renew in person once every 8 years at a Secretary of State branch office.
If you must renew your license while out of state, a vision statement from a licensed eye care physician will be required before processing a renewal request. An out of state renewal request may also take up to six weeks to complete.
