Renewing Online If your Social Security number has not been verified by the Department of State, you will be asked to provide proof of a valid Social Security number. If you are applying for a standard state ID card and do not have a Social Security number, you must present a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration and proof of legal presence. Renewing at a Secretary of State Office
Whether you renew online, by mail or at a branch office, your renewed ID card is valid for up to four years and should arrive in the mail within two to three weeks. If you are in the U.S. and have temporary legal presence, you will be issued a limited-term state ID card. A limited term ID card is valid for up to four years. If you are eligible to renew it, the ID card expiration date will not extend beyond the end date of your temporary legal presence.

If you are out of state and your standard ID card is up for renewal or expires, you may be eligible to renew it online through ExpressSOS. For more information, select "Renew State ID Card" from the ExpressSOS home page. State ID cards that require a name change or correction to a date of birth must be renewed at a Secretary of State office.
