Troubleshooting Bar Code Scanner Problems

Troubleshooting and Helpful Hints

Scanning bar codes using the Bar Code scanner works best when utilizing the following procedures:

  1. Drag the scanner quickly across the bar code. Errors often occur because scanners users scan too slowly.
  2. The tip of the scanner should lightly touch the paper.
  3. Hold the scanner at a 10 to 30 degree angle to the paper.
  4. The brighter the lighting, the better.
  5. Start scanning on one side of the bar code. Make sure that you scan the complete bar code. The bar code scanner will read left to right or right to left.
  6. Protect your bar codes! Bar codes are easily smudged or damaged. Remind poll workers to protect the polling list minimizing hand contact with the bar codes and not resting arms or other objects on the bar codes.

PROBLEM: No number appears in the field when a bar code is scanned.

  1. Is the bar code scanner set up properly? The keyboard should plug into the back of the scanner. The scanner should plug into the back of the computer.
  2. Is the bar code scanner getting power? The red and green lights on the front of the bar code scanner should be on.
  3. Is the bar code scanner working? The green light should flicker when the scanner is dragged across the bar code.
  4. Is the bar code scanner being dragged fast enough? Are the optimal conditions listed above being observed? The scanner should beep once after successfully scanning a bar code.
  5. Does the scanner beep once after scanning but nothing appears in the field? The scanner may need to be reformatted. Scan the [Reset Options] bar code on page 59 of the Programming Manual. The scanner will beep three times.

PROBLEM: Incomplete bar codes are being scanned.

  1. Is the bar code scanner being dragged across the bar code fast enough and at a steady pace? Ensure that the optimal conditions listed above are being observed.
  2. Does the tip of the bar code scanner need cleaning? Wipe off the tip of the bar code scanner with a soft, dry cloth.
  3. Is the bar code adequate? Scan the bar codes on page 21 of the Installation Manual to see if they scan consistently.

PROBLEM: None of the above.

  1. In rare cases, electrostatic discharges may cause the bar code scanner and computer to malfunction. As a last resort, disconnect and reconnect the keyboard and perform steps 1 & 2 as described above under “Does the scanner beep once…”
  2. Does the problem persist? Contact the QVF Help Desk.
