?News You Can Use"

AutoMARK Ballot Production Standards Issues ? At recent workshops which were conducted by Gary Olivi, Director of Operations for AutoMARK Technical Support, it was pointed out that certain ballot production standards should be observed by those responsible for the production of optical scan ballots that will be used in conjunction with the AutoMARK voter assist terminals.  The standards, which are provided below, were incorporated into the larger ?Ballot Production Standards" document which was forwarded to all county clerks and ballot printers on August 29th.

  • Avoid placing thick bold lines near ovals to avoid ballot misreads

  • ID bars and channel code bars must not touch the ballot cut marks

  • Avoid print washout (skips in ink or faded ink)

  • When cutting ballots, ensure that the cut is not skewed

While ballot proofing is the responsibility of the County Election Commission, all clerks should carefully review their ballots to ensure that the above standards are met.  In addition, it is important that you proof all local offices and issues prior to testing and the issuance of absent voter ballots.

Notification Update - Refresher training on the Automark Voter Assist Terminals (VATS), Provisional Balloting and Dual Ballot Procedures ? As we advised on September 11, the Department of State's Bureau of Elections will begin a series of countywide refresher training programs on October 2.  These programs are designed for local clerks, their deputies and precinct chairs Since our earlier announcement, several additional locations and dates have been added to the schedule.  A complete listing of the program dates, times and locations is provided below.  (Please note Central Standard Time (CST) for Menominee and Dickinson counties.)  An RSVP is not required.

Program content - Each program will include a review of issues related to the administration of the AutoMARK system including discussions about what we have learned and where we go from here; Provisional ballots and the 4-Step Provisional Ballot Procedure form; issuing and documenting dual ballots for counties that will be required to issue two ballots (or two ballot pages) to each voter.

Attention County Clerks!  If you have made arrangements to offer this program in your county, please forward a copy of this notice and schedule to the clerk's within your county that do not receive e-mail via the QVF system.  Please do not hesitate to contact this office if you have any questions.
