JUNE 18, 2009

A good fit can make all the difference when you're behind the wheel of your car. That's the word from Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, AAA Michigan and AARP.

The Department of State has teamed up with AAA Michigan and AARP to promote CarFit, a traffic safety program for mature drivers, all summer long. The CarFit program will visit the Meridian Senior Center, 4000 N. Okemos Road, Okemos on Thursday, June 25 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

"I encourage all seniors to take advantage of this free program," Land said. "CarFit representatives help adjust the settings for controls, mirrors, seats and other components--making seniors safer and more comfortable behind the wheel."

"This program is aimed at helping seniors drive safely on the road," said Jack Peet, Community Safety Services manager for AAA Michigan. "As drivers mature, their vehicle needs may change. We want to help them ensure that their vehicles are properly adjusted for their needs."

Trained professionals help drivers adjust their vehicle's controls to best fit their height and size. They also offer community-specific resources and activities to enhance driver safety.

Department staff will also be on site to enhance evaluation techniques that can be used at driver re-examinations to promote greater safety behind the wheel.

To participate in CarFit, you must be a licensed driver at least 65 years old and own a registered vehicle. Call AAA Community Safety Services at (800) 646-4222 to schedule an appointment.

In addition to the Okemos event, evaluations will be offered on the following dates:

  • July 15 at the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District Career-Tech Center, 880 Parsons Road, Traverse City
  • July 21 at Baker College, 1903 Marquette Ave., Muskegon
  • July 29 at Grand Rapids City High School, 1400 Fuller N.E., Grand Rapids

Additional events will be held statewide through the summer and fall.

Secretary of State branch offices near CarFit evaluation sites will provide printed materials and a schedule of events. Those materials are also available on the department's Web site at www.Michigan.gov/sos.

CarFit was developed through collaboration among the American Occupational Therapy Association, AAA and AARP.
