SEPTEMBER 23, 2005
Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land today announced that her department is helping Hurricane Katrina evacuees in Michigan receive replacement driver’s licenses and identification cards from their home states.
The effort is part of a multifaceted Michigan Department of State outreach initiative to assist victims in securing the proof of identity needed to apply for a driver’s license or ID card.
"Our out-of-state guests are working to get back on their feet," Land said. "Obtaining a driver’s license or ID card is a critical step in that process. We’re committed to providing the necessary support and assistance so that they can be served as quickly as possible in spite of these difficult circumstances. The department will do its best to expedite each application while ensuring the integrity of these critical documents. We understand the importance of a driver’s license or ID card in everyday life, and we will work with the victims to help get their lives back on track."
The department is coordinating efforts with the hurricane-ravaged states of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. Evacuees in Michigan can go to any branch office and complete an application for a replacement or ID from their home states at no cost.
Branch employees will fax the document to the appropriate state agency. Applicants need to provide their full names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers and are required to sign the replacement application before it will be processed.
The department also is helping victims to obtain a Michigan license or ID card, though Land emphasized that evacuees should only pursue that route if they intend to establish residency in this state.
To request a Michigan license or ID card, applicants must provide acceptable identification documents and proof of residency. Acceptable forms of proof of residency include bank statements, lease agreements and paycheck stubs.
Other assistance provided by the department includes:
- Working closely with other state departments and relief agencies to make sure that they understand the assistance that branch offices can provide.
- Posting Michigan’s driver’s license and ID requirements at www.Michigan.gov/sos.
