SEPTEMBER 18, 2006

Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land today joined with community and business leaders at the Sparrow Professional Building to help officially launch the 2006 Michigan Harvest Gathering campaign.

The campaign runs today through Nov. 13 and raises food and funds to help feed hungry families in all of Michigan’s 83 counties.

"Many Michigan families are struggling to make ends meet," Land said. "Hunger is in virtually every community and every neighborhood. But participating in the Michigan Harvest Gathering can help make a difference in the lives of our needy neighbors.

"That’s why we’re proud to once again lend a hand by making our branch offices available as drop-off points for nonperishable donations. Our Secretary of State team – as well as employees across state government – always gives generously during this drive. I know we’ll all step up to make this year’s Harvest Gathering the best ever."

The Michigan Harvest Gathering campaign is the centerpiece of the Food Bank Council of Michigan’s mission to end hunger. Since its inception in 1991, the event has raised nearly $5 million and collected 7 million pounds of food for hungry families throughout Michigan. More than one million people in Michigan will need to use a food bank this year. This year’s goal is to raise $350,000 and 500,000 pounds of food.

"Michigan hospitals and hospital volunteers have been long-time supporters of the successful Michigan Harvest Gathering Campaign," said Sparrow President and CEO Dennis Swan. "The healthcare sector and its employees have a special responsibility to patients and the community. Michigan Harvest Gathering is a great opportunity to help fulfill our calling as community stewards."

Sparrow is providing more than a dozen drop-off sites for food collection.

Individuals can help by donating money, giving food and volunteering at their local food bank.
