OCTOBER 31, 2006

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land announced today that all branch offices and the Office of the Great Seal will be closed in observance of Veterans Day and Thanksgiving holidays. She also will keep some offices open on Election Day to handle urgent customer business.

Residents are reminded that on:

  • Election Day - Most of state government will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 7, except select Secretary of State branch offices. All PLUS offices and SUPER!Centers will be open with minimal staffing levels. Eight other traditional offices will remain open as well, ensuring a regional balance in the number of branches operating that day.

The list of offices open on Nov. 7 is below. In addition, the Department of State Web site features a Branch Office Locator that provides addresses and services of all offices, as well as maps to the offices so that customers can find the most convenient location.

  • Veterans Day - All offices will be closed on Friday, Nov. 10, and SUPER!Centers will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 11
  • Thanksgiving - All offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 23, Friday, Nov. 24, and SUPER!Centers will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 25

The department mails notices to motorists 45 days before their driver's license or license plates expire to give them ample time to renew. Licenses and plates that expire on a day when state offices are closed, such as a holiday or weekend, can be renewed the following day without penalty.

Motorists renewing license plates can "skip the trip" to the branch office and do business by mail, or if eligible, by Internet or touch-tone telephone. Easy to follow instructions can be found with the renewal notice. License plate tabs will arrive by mail within seven business days.

With the exception of holidays, branch offices are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Smaller branch offices may close for the lunch hour. On Wednesday most offices are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with those in city centers open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PLUS offices and SUPER!Centers are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday. SUPER!Centers also provide Saturday hours from 9 a.m. to noon.
