NOVEMBER 2, 2006

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land reminds residents that she is making special arrangements to keep certain branch offices open on Election Day.

Most of state government will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 7 due to a negotiated agreement with labor unions that makes Election Day an employee holiday. Land, however, devised a plan to accommodate Secretary of State customers who must conduct business on that day. Land's initiative allows all PLUS offices and SUPER!Centers to remain open with minimal staffing levels. Eight other traditional offices will remain open as well, ensuring a regional balance in the number of branches operating that day.

"We're making an extra effort to take care of our customers who have urgent business on Election Day," Land said. "But we do encourage anyone with routine transactions to consider doing business online or visit our branch offices before Election Day. The reduced staffing levels will make it difficult for us to adequately serve large numbers of customers. With everyone's cooperation and understanding, we can efficiently serve our guests who have pressing needs."

Land pointed out that late fees for licenses and registrations expiring on Nov. 7 will be waived if customers renew the next day. She also reminded people that they can avoid trips to a branch office by doing business online at www.Michigan.gov/sos.

Offices open on Nov. 7 is listed below.  Customers also can use the online Branch Office Locator to check the status of their nearest office, and to find out more about department services and requirements.
