Secretary Land issues statement
on the passing of Gerald R. Ford
Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land released the following statement regarding the death of President Gerald R. Ford:
"The extraordinary life of a great American has ended but his integrity, courage and wisdom will remain an inspiration to us all.
"Gerald Ford was a public servant of the highest caliber. He did not aspire to the vice presidency or the presidency, yet he graciously accepted the mantle of leadership when our country called. Resolving 'to do what is right as God gives me to see the right' and 'to do the very best that I can for America,' he took a wounded nation's troubles upon his shoulders and sought to heal them.
"President Ford never forgot his roots. He truly was a 'man of the people' who maintained a lifelong connection with West Michigan. In his typical modest manner, he showed that while a person can change the office, the office does not have to change the person.
"His impact on my life has been profound. In 1976, I experienced the incomparable thrill of working as a volunteer on his presidential campaign and attending the national convention to see him win the Republican nomination. He has been my hero since I was in high school and I am proud to call him a mentor. I still have letters that he sent me, which I cherish to this day.
"President Ford's example of honesty, decency and mercy endures for everyone who seeks or holds public office to follow. He exemplifies everything I strive to be as an elected official and I will miss him dearly.
"President Ford deeply believed in the greatness of America. He was very proud of our country. Today, as we reflect on his contributions to that greatness, our country is proud of him.
"I extend my heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife Betty, their children and the entire family."
