FEBRUARY 15, 2007

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is encouraging voters to participate in the Tuesday, Feb. 27 election.

"When you cast your ballot, you impact your community," said Land, Michigan's chief election officer. "Please take this opportunity to speak up about the issues. Let your vote be your voice."

When they go to the polls, residents in 35 Michigan counties will be asked to vote on issues affecting school districts, cities, townships, villages and counties. Those ballot issues include school bond proposals, road millages, special elections and recalls.

"These elections are being held under Michigan's consolidated elections law," Land said. "Requiring all elections to be held on set dates throughout the year helps promote participation."

Other dates are in May, August and November.

To find out if there is an election in their community, voters can visit the Secretary of State Web site at www.Michigan.gov/sos or check with their county clerk's office. In addition, the Michigan Voter Information Center can help residents determine whether they're registered to vote. If they are registered, it will direct them to their polling location. The Web site is www.Michigan.gov/vote.

Voters who need to have their absentee ballot mailed to them, must apply for the ballot no later than 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24. Absentee ballots can be obtained in person anytime through 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26. Voters who request an absentee ballot in person on Monday, Feb. 26 must vote the ballot in the clerk's office. Emergency absentee ballots are available under certain conditions through 4 p.m. on the date of the election.

Additional election information can be found at www.Michigan.gov/sos.
