MARCH 15, 2007
Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land read to fourth-graders at Hamilton Elementary School in Allegan County today, marking the observance of March as National Reading Month, by sharing the importance of literacy in schoolwork and in life.
Land read the children's book "Hidden Michigan," written by Anne Margaret Lewis and Janis Campbell, and illustrated by Wendy Popko, all Michigan residents. The book celebrates all the history, nature and fun the Great Lakes State has to offer.
"Strong reading skills are a necessity to succeed in today's work force," Land said.
"I want to thank the teachers and staff of Hamilton Elementary for allowing me to visit with the children and share my love of reading. I especially enjoyed reading ‘Hidden Michigan' because it teaches children about our state while nurturing young imaginations."
Lewis' "Hidden Michigan," published by the Traverse City-based Mackinac Island Press, is among the author's many children's books.
Land plans to visit with students in an Orchard Lake elementary school later in the week.
