MARCH 16, 2007
Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land read to fourth-graders at Pine Lake Elementary School in Orchard Lake today, marking the observance of March as National Reading Month, by sharing the importance of literacy in schoolwork and in life.
Land read the children's book "Hidden Michigan," written by Anne Margaret Lewis and Janis Campbell, and illustrated by Wendy Popko, all Michigan residents. The book celebrates all the history, nature and fun the Great Lakes State has to offer.
"‘Hidden Michigan' is such a great book to share because it teaches children interesting details about our state's wonderful history and natural beauty while fostering a greater interest in books," Land said. "I want to thank the Pine Lake Elementary staff and all Michigan teachers for the work they do to encourage literacy. Today's work place demands top-notch reading skills, and from what I saw today, Michigan's young people are up to the challenge."
Lewis' "Hidden Michigan," published by the Traverse City-based Mackinac Island Press, is among the author's many children's books.
Earlier in the week, Land read to students in an Allegan County elementary school.
