APRIL 19. 2007
Visitors to the 2007 Auto Value Tech Expo in Lansing can take advantage of a convenient testing option for mechanics on Saturday, April 21, saving hundreds of test-takers a trip to a branch office.
Secretary of State personnel will offer the automotive and heavy duty truck mechanic exams at the expo, which draws auto dealers, repair shop technicians and others from across the state to the Lansing Center. The department has offered the exams at the expo for the past six years, administering more than 3,000 tests during those visits.
The nearly 500 attendees expected to take the test on Saturday outnumber those who test in branch offices in an average month. Another advantage to taking the test at the expo is that attendees will get their results back in two to three weeks, about half the usual time.
"Customer service is our priority," Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land said. "It's great to see another example of moving services beyond the branch offices to add more options and convenience for the people we serve."
In addition to what is provided at branch offices, customers also can access a number of services available online and by phone, at a touring Mobile Branch Office, and at the many
Self-Service Stations that allow people to renew their license plate tabs after regular business hours.
Testing costs $6 and is open to those attending the expo. Tests will be given as space permits from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Besides the testing offered, Secretary of State personnel will offer a two-hour training session for repair shop owners, technicians and managers about how to best comply with motor vehicle service and repair laws.
