Secretary Land comments after court ruling on primary election

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land today issued this statement following the Michigan Supreme Court ruling on the Jan. 15, 2008 presidential primary:

"Voter participation is the foundation of our democracy. That's why we have worked to create a presidential primary process that is available to all voters. We continue to believe that it is important for as many voters as possible to have a say in the selection of their presidential candidates.

"Today's state Supreme Court ruling effectively reinstates the Jan. 15, 2008 presidential primary. Our appreciation goes out to the court for its swift action. It's clear that the justices understood the concern voiced by Michigan's local election officials for a prompt decision. It is unfortunate that these delays will force our local election officials to perform their duties in a compressed time period. However, I am confident that they will conduct this election with the same level of professionalism that they have brought to all previous elections and do their best to ensure that all voters have the opportunity to cast a ballot in the Jan. 15 election."
