MARCH 14, 2008

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land read to fourth-graders at Hamilton Elementary School in Allegan County today, marking the observance of March as National Reading Month.

Land, accompanied by the Dr. Seuss character the Cat in the Hat, read the children's book, "America Is," written by Louise Borden and illustrated by Stacey Schuett. The book highlights the diversity of people and places that make up America, and includes the Pledge of Allegiance and "The Star-Spangled Banner."

"I encourage children to take the time to read, and I also encourage parents to read to their children," Land said. "Reading is both enjoyable and educational. What I enjoy about this book is its emphasis on the diversity of our great nation - from the big cities to the prairies and fields, from the East Coast to the West Coast and all stops in between. I want to thank the teachers and staff of Hamilton Elementary School for allowing me to visit with the children and share my love of reading."

She also gave the class a copy of the children's book, "Hidden Michigan," written by Anne Margaret Lewis and Janis Campbell, and illustrated by Wendy Popko.

Land plans to visit with students in Sterling Heights early next week.
