Over 1 million Spectacular Peninsulas license plates have been sold since the design was introduced in January 2007, according to Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land.

"I'm pleased to announce the success of this beautiful plate," said Land. "Since the Spectacular Peninsulas plate was unveiled, Michigan residents have overwhelmingly embraced its mix of urban vitality and rural beauty."

The plate features a dynamic cityscape in the upper-left corner, a swaying wheat field in the top center and a majestic forest in the upper right. An outline of Michigan surrounded by the Great Lakes highlights the plate's center while the mighty Mackinac Bridge crosses the bottom. The slogan "Spectacular Peninsulas" is to the right of the Bridge. Predominant plate colors are blue, green and white. The plate is available for a one-time fee of $5 in addition to the standard vehicle registration fee.

Through the 2006 License Plate Design Challenge, Land encouraged residents of all ages to submit their ideas for creation of the plate. She joined other judges in selecting the elements of the final design from more than 1,500 entries.

Judging the entries were Kim Kyff of Bloomfield Hills, 2006-2007 Michigan Teacher of the Year and a fifth-grade teacher at Jamieson Elementary School in Detroit; Terry Jungel, director of the Michigan Sheriff's Association; George Bayard III of Kentwood, member of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs; Ken Hayward of Okemos, vice president of sales and marketing for the Grand Hotel and vice chairman of the Michigan Travel Commission; former state Sen. Beverly Hammerstrom of Temperance; and state Rep. Richard Ball of Bennington Township.

The plate was created to replace the 10-year-old Great Lakes Splendor plate, often called the "Bridge" plate, which is no longer available for purchase but can be renewed. Sale of the new plate also coincided with the phase-out of the standard license plate known as "Old Blue."

In addition to the Spectacular Peninsulas license plate, residents can choose from the new standard white plate or one of several fundraising license plates. Veteran plates with Spectacular Peninsulas or standard white designs are also available.

Plates can be renewed online or in a branch office. For more information, visit www.Michigan.gov/sos.
