What should I do with the $40 abandoned vehicle fee if the VIN isn't on the Secretary of State's Michigan Auto Lost & Found Web site?

Answer:

It is possible that the law enforcement agency hasn't entered the vehicle as abandoned. Contact the law enforcement agency to inform them of the vehicle's disposition. Send a check for $25 payable to the "State of Michigan - Abandoned Vehicle" to:

Michigan Department of State - Abandoned Vehicle
Attn:  Cashier Section
7064 Crowner Drive
Lansing, MI 48918

Please write the vehicle's VIN in the memo section of your check, along with the words "VIN not on Web site." If you are sending a check for more than one vehicle, you may enclose a separate sheet of paper listing the VINs. If you write a check, do not enter a disposition on the Web site for this VIN at a later date! The remaining $15 should go to the towing agency.
