New sticker allows enthusiasts to enjoy yesterday's
sleds today
Historic snowmobile enthusiasts now have a new way to enjoy their sport and
Michigan's great outdoors with the new historic snowmobile registration decal
that went on sale this week, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson
announced today.
"With more than 6,200 miles of snowmobile trails, Michigan is truly a winter
wonderland for snowmobile enthusiasts," Johnson said. "That's why I'm pleased to
offer the new historical snowmobile decal that lets people enjoy and show off
their vintage sleds at shows and club events."
Snowmobiles 26 years old and older, and owned solely as a collector's item
are eligible for the historic registration decal, which costs $50. A Michigan
snowmobile trail permit is not required for snowmobiles that have a historic
registration decal.
Sleds registered as historic are limited to occasional use and may only be
used in club activities, exhibitions, tours and for similar uses. The
registration does not expire and may not be transferred to a new owner if the
snowmobile is sold. Registration fees support snowmobile trail grooming and
other purposes.
"The Michigan Snowmobile Association and its members are thrilled that this
option is now available to enthusiasts with historic snowmobiles," said Bill
Manson, the association's executive director. "The shows and racing events for
antique and vintage sleds have taken snowmobilers back to their roots in the
sport."
